I’m currently working on two new albums that will hopefully be released in 2026. They were going to be released in 2025, but I put recording on hold to prepare for my first show playing my songs in nearly 30 years. I had to learn the words to some of the songs since I’d only sung them when I recorded them, and I had to get used to singing all of them while playing guitar since I’d only played bass or drums in all the bands I’d been in. You can see videos of the show here. The show was so much fun, but I’m now back to working on the new albums.
One of the albums I’m working on is probably the last batch of songs from “the vault” - these were started between 1998 and 2000. It will be pretty different from the other 4 I’ve put out. Several songs have acoustic guitars and the ones with electric guitars have little to no distortion. They are all influenced by bands like Big Star/Alex Chilton, Wilco and the Flat Duo Jets.
The other album is a re-recording of something I originally put out in 1993. Like Surly, it was recorded using two tape decks patched together so I could overdub and released on cassette. The Smears played several of the songs, and one was played by the Phoebes. I don’t like making significant edits to things I did in the past, but some of the lyrics for these songs are terrible and embarrassing - I think I was trying way to hard to be deep. I was 17, so pretty typical for that age I guess. I will put the original recording on this site after the re-recorded one comes out.
